PHILOSOPHER and historian Georg Hegel lectured on the Roman world, and speaking of Caesar, he said:

“…it became immediately manifest that only a single will could guide the Roman State, and now the Romans were compelled to adopt that opinion; since in all periods of the world a political revolution is sanctioned in men’s opinions, when it repeats itself.”

Karl Marx added to Hegel’s observation of history repeating: “the first time is a tragedy; the second time a farce” 

The elevation of Christianity as the official religion of Constantine’s empire was a collaboration between the emperor and the church, giving the church a place in politics: an adopted concept of an ancient Hebrew religious practice of leadership anointed at the hand of God’s prophet.

With the inception of the US Constitution, the goal of separating church from state was Not About An Absence of Faith (check library of Congress for correspondence of founders and their spiritual beliefs), morals or fundamental rights (hence “rule of law” – the purpose of laws) but to put a check on monopoly and power in the name of religion.
